Super Mario Felt Christmas Tree

I have been working on this for over a month now. I am so excited to share the end result! I got the idea of a felt tree from Pinterest but came up with the theme of Super Mario ornaments and how to make them on my own. Since we don’t have much room in our apartment we couldn’t get a Christmas tree, so I turned it into something fun for my toddler to play with. Here is the end result:

Here’s what you need: (1 yard of dark green felt for the tree $5.99, and then one small square each of the following colors: yellow, brown, orange, red, white, tan and green 4 for $1.00. Felt glue $5.99, permanent marker $0.99, fabric scissors $2.99 and printouts of whichever character you choose).

First I drew an outline of a Christmas tree on the yard of green felt, and then my husband (whose the better artist) drew over my Christmas tree:

Then cut it out and place on the wall (I mounted mine to the wall with a staple gun).

Next print out the characters that you want and cut those out and then place the cutouts on the color of felt that is dominant in the character:

Trace the characters and cut them out: (For the precise lines do your best to draw them on with a permanent marker).

For the smaller felt parts cut out the traceable part from the character you printed out like this: (Then trace on the right color of felt and glue on to the previous felt part that was cut out)

I referred to online pictures from my phone to make sure that I got the right colors and the right parts where they were supposed to go:

Let the glue dry for about an hour and then let your lovable ones play!

Just be careful to monitor them, my little guy already ripped the question mark block apart…Have fun!!

 

 

Street Tacos

I made these tacos for the first time this weekend and they are now on the weekly dinner list. They are so good and also healthy! I hope you enjoy!

Prep time: 15 minutesย  Cook time: 10 minutesย  Serves about 3 people

First cut the fat off of the steak and cut it into stringy pieces.

They should end up looking like this:

Heat the oil in the skillet over medium heat and then add the steak. Season the steak with garlic powder, cayenne pepper, and salt. Saute for about 8-10 minutes.

Add the garlic and saute for an extra 2 minutes, and then remove from heat.

Now let’s prepare the mouthwatering cilantro lime vinaigrette: Chop up about 3/4 cup of cilantro add them to the blender.

Add the juice of two limes

The 1/3 cup of oil (I used extra virgin olive oil)

Add the 4 teaspoons of minced garlic

Add the 1/4 cup of white wine vinegar

Add the 1/4 cup of milk (I used fat free milk)

Add the 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt

And finally the 4 teaspoons of sugar

Blend together for about a minute or until it’s completely blended into a liquid.

While your steak is cooking you can cut up the cabbage into thin slices and also some cilantro and onion for garnish and set aside.

Now it’s time to put the tacos together! Microwave the corn tortillas for about 30 seconds.

Then add the steak, pour on the vinaigrette, top with the cabbage and cilantro

Then fold them into a taco!

Ingredients:

6 inch white corn tortillas

1 pound skirt steak

1/2 teaspoon of salt

1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon minced garlic

1 teaspoon of oil

1 cup diced onion

1/2 cup cilantro

2 cups cabbage

Cilantro Lime Vinaigrette:

3/4 cup cilantro

Juice of 2 limes

1/3 cup oil

4 teaspoons minced garlic

1/4 cup white wine vinegar

4 teaspoons of sugar

1/4 cup fat free milk

1/2 cup of Greek yogurt

Carrot Themed Chocolate Strawberries

First, grab a helper, even if it’s for them to eat the fallen Oreos onto the floor ๐Ÿ˜‰

First start with lining a baking pan with parchment paper

Melt vanilla chocolate wafers in microwave or according to the package(These can be bought at Hobby Lobby, Michael’s or sometimes in the produce section of any grocery store).

Add 2 yellow food coloring drops to every 1 red food coloring drops, do this until you get a deep orange color.

Rinse the strawberries

Make sure to completely dry them in paper towels, the chocolate won’t stick too well if they are wet.

Dip them in the chocolate, I recommend sticking a fork through the top side of the strawberry to more easily lift them out of the chocolate(Note: if chocolate gets too stiff add olive oil to thin it out, DO NOT REHEAT).

Place on parchment paper, wait until the chocolate has completely set.

Add crushed Oreos (no filling) to the bottom of the cup(I used about 2 cookies for the bottom).

You can make your own pudding, or just buy snack packs (which is what I did) and add until it’s 3/4 of the way to the top.

Add more Oreos (about 3 cookies) on top of the pudding, and then place the strawberry in the middle of the Oreos.

To make the strawberries look even more like carrots take a black gel decorator tube and squiggle lines across the strawberry (this worked better when the strawberry was still on the parchment paper).

If you don’t have enough cups, pudding or Oreos that doesn’t matter, they look adorable without the cup too ๐Ÿ˜‰

Ingredients:

  • Strawberries (rinsed and dried)
  • Vanilla Candy Melts
  • Red & Yellow food coloring
  • Parchment Paper
  • Plastic cups (I bought mine from Target)
  • Black gel cake decorator
  • Pudding (Or snack packs)
  • Crushed Oreos

Chicken Noodle Soup

Start With the Chicken:

Start with 2 tablespoons of olive oil and place the chicken breasts on top and then cover with the seasonings, flip the breasts and cover with seasonings on the other side. Continually flip the chicken, shredding the chicken with two forks as each layer cooks, this helps to speed up the cooking time or you can wait until they are fully cooked to start shredding them. While these are cooking prepare the soup in a big soup pan. Wait to prepare the noodles until you are almost done for they only take 8 minutes to cook.

During the end it’s going to be quick with the soup boiling, shredding the chicken and cooking the noodles.

The Soup:

In a large pot pour in 2 tablespoons of olive oil, half a bag of sliced carrots, and 5 stalks of diced celery over medium heat for about 8 minutes.

Add the garlic

And salt and cook for about another minute

Then add the chicken broth, bay leaf and water. Increase heat to high and bring to a boil.

Stir in the chicken

And lemon juice while reducing the heat.

To serve add in the noodles separately to the soup, this keeps the noodles from absorbing too much liquid and tasting overcooked. Enjoy! Don’t forget to take out the bay leaf!

If you intend to have leftovers, I suggest storing the soup and noodles separately so that the noodles don’t absorb the liquid.

Ingredients:

3 skinless and boneless chicken brests

3-32 oz chicken broth

4 cups of water

Juice of 1 lemon

Noodles-however you like them-I used gluten free rotini ๐Ÿ™‚

Half a bag of sliced carrots

5 celery stalks-diced

1 onion-chopped finely

4 Tbsp. of olive oil

1 bay leaf

1 Tsp. Garlic Powder

1 Tsp. Ground Cumin

1/2 Tsp. Chili Powder

1/2 Tsp. Cayenne Pepper

1/2 Tsp. Dried Oregeno

8 Garlic Cloves-minced

Cookie Shot

The cookies shots were a lot of fun to make. To be honest I thought they were going to be a Pinterest fail but they actually turned out great! They would be a lot of fun at any get together.

Cookie Shot Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup Shortening
  • 1/3 Cup Sugar
  • 1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
  • 1 Egg Yolk
  • 2 Cups Flour
  • 2 Tsp. Vanilla Extract
  • 1/2 Tsp. Salt
  • 1 Cup Mini Chocolate Chips
  • 1 Cup Candy Melts
  • Milk

Directions:

  1. Set oven to 350 Degrees Fahrenheit
  2. Grease popover pan
  3. Blend together shortening, sugar and brown sugar
  4. Add the egg yolk and vanilla
  5. Gradually add the flour and salt
  6. Then add the chocolate chips, you can mix these in with your hands
  7. Mold the dough into the pan leaving a hole in the middle(for detailed directions check out the video!)
  8. Chill in the refrigerator for 20 minutes
  9. Bake for 20 minutes
  10. Let it completely cool
  11. *Be careful when taking out of popover pan, I had to use a spoon but try to twirl it in the pan cup to loosen it up
  12. Melt the candy melts-DON’T OVERHEAT!!
  13. Pour the candy melts into the well of the cookie and swirl around until entire well is covered, quickly flip over to pour the excess.
  14. Let the chocolate hardened
  15. Pour milk inside the well, and enjoy!

Recovering From Heartbreak

Close your eyes, breathe in, breathe out…you WILL get through this. Hold onto those words, you WILL get through this. There is life after this part of your life, an abundance of life that is waiting for you. This heartbreak is not your life, it is PART of your life, this part of your life will either make you bitter or better. You can choose to keep getting hurt by visiting these feelings repetitively while never moving on; or, you can heal, forgive, and love again. This time of recovery is a process, you cannot skip steps and speed your way to living in peace again. This is not Candy Land where you can skip most of the board, visit Queen Frostine and soon win the game. There are going to be good days and bad days, I think the worst day is the day after you were let go-I may sound like an employer but “dumped” is such a harsh term, or maybe you are the one who called it off because you knew that this relationship was not meant for you but of course it is painful still. I only heard the “breakup words,” once and it felt like someone in the distance was listening in and as soon as they heard the exact words of, “I hope we can still be friends,” they threw a brick Tom Brady style smashing me in the face and then threw a watermelon that hit hard directly in the gut.

The day after:

  • Typically is spent in a daze, like WTFreak just happened?! I gave X-amount of time with this person, what a waste.
  • Blaming is a common action to jump to, blaming the other person or blaming yourself for the split.
  • A parent, BFF, close relative, or someone of comfort is called and they hear the whole story of how you should not have even been with that person anyways and how you are better off-but really you are dying inside.
  • Statuses may or may not be changed at this point, if it ended badly then you were “single” last night with an updated profile picture and all couple photos deleted. For the people hoping that this is just a couple of days thing, they will keep the status as “In A Relationship” but keeping a close eye on what the other person is doing with their status and once they change theirs you must change yours immediately!
  • No big changes in life happen right away because you still are recovering from getting hit by a bus.

During the week after:

  • A cry it out fest probably won’t happen until a couple of days after the break up, when you finally have accepted that it is over and all of the emotions catch up with you. This is splurge time, forget about your comeback body right now, eat the ice cream, chips & guacamole until you are green or whatever else you turn to for comfort food.
  • Daydreams of what to do, now that you are single, start to fill your head. Ireland? 24 Hours of WOW?
  • Ideas of how to “get back at them” without them knowing it, like achieving killer abs, uploading a ton of pictures to social media of how much fun you are having now without them and spreading rumors of a new romance to your ex’s closest people.

I swear I started this post on a serious note.

Let us get started on the “you after that person.”

First question is, do you want that person back or is your life better without them? Whichever the answer the following could be used for either:

  1. Often people advise to get rid of everything that reminds you of that person, but I think that you should just put it all into a box, maybe one day you could show your kids of someone that you were with before you met their mom or dad. I think it would have been interesting to know who was with my mom or dad before they were together. Then again I definitely know who they were with after they were together…Maybe ask someone to hold onto the box until you are able to have it near you and not get emotional about it to the point where it hurts. If you do get back with your ex you will probably need that box back…
  2. Of course there is the idea of going crazy on comfort food, but don’t go too crazy you need to work on that after break up body ๐Ÿ˜‰ For a better form of comfort I would suggest a day at the spa-if you can afford it-, something with a rush feeling like bungee jumping, skydiving, or riding extreme roller coaster rides.
  3. It might sound a little feminine for a guy but write it out dude-I don’t need to tell the girls this because they already have a book published on this breakup. Even if you delete everything you write after you are done, it is so good to just write out however you are feeling without worrying if someone is judging you. I would recommend saving it though so that if you ever wonder if you made the right decision or not, you can go back and read what you wrote to remind you of the pain that you went through. Or if you get back together with your ex share with them what you wrote to help them better understand the hurt that you felt.
  4. You need some distance, however much is up to you. Both of you need time to be alone and evaluate the decision that has been made whether it to be permanent or that you only need a break. Honestly, when there are too many “breaks” in a relationship that is a big red flag that it’s not going to work out. Also, decide if you want distance from only that person or all people together. Definitely do not go into hibernation where no one can find you, but distancing yourself from people who have too much influence on your life is best. This next decision needs to come from you.
  5. If you are the addictive type make sure that you enlist your buddies to make sure that you do not go down a bad path. Instead direct your addiction to something that will help you like hitting the gym hard, going on a crazy nutritious diet, practice something new until you are Beethoven, or Mozart.
  6. After your heart has fully healed you need to stage your comeback, the “you in 5D.” That’s right because now you can taste, hear, smell, touch AND see better. Take a million selfies, switch up your wardrobe, show off that awesome new bod, have awesome events planned with a lot of friends and make sure that they know that you are ready to fully move on. The easiest way to move on from someone is to find someone else but don’t take the easy way because you could get hurt even more doing this. Starting to date again is like soy sauce on sushi, my version of frosting on the cake, you need to make the sushi first-heal yourself.

Please do remember that a breakup is bound to happen if that person just is not for you. Do not lose hope, you will find that person but improve on yourself first, if you want the perfect person, first you have to be the perfect you. Be patient, wouldn’t you want to wait for the right one rather than be with the wrong one now? And don’t we all want to find love like the couple in UP???
